Mark Able started his motorcycling career aged 16 on an old Yamaha FS1E in 1981. Passing the old bike test in January 1983 on a Yamaha DT175MX, but really knowing nothing about the world of motorcycling. Having spent most his adult life riding bikes, it seemed inevitable that he would turn his hand to instructing. In 1994, Mark started as an instructor for CSM Rider Training in Swindon, then the largest training school in the country, with over 50 branches nationwide. Within 7 weeks he'd been promoted to 'Senior Instructor', and in 7 months 'Chief Instructor'. In 18 months he was running his own branch in Poole, Dorset, as 'Manager'. It was during the first 6 months as an instructor that he completed the rigorous 2 day assessment at Cardington (DSA headquarters), achieving the highest pass mark. In 1996, when Direct Access was introduced, Mark was the first instructor from CSM to take the new assessment at Cardington, passing with flying colours. His training notes became the training notes for all instructors attending the new Direct Access assessment from CSM. In 1995, he attended the Yamaha Race School at Brands Hatch and achieved one of the highest scores that year. The thirst for knowledge continues to this day.
Seeing clouds on the horizon, Mark started his own training school (Able Motorcycle Training) in 1998. A year later CSM Rider Training went bust. Originally based in Frome, Somerset, now relocated to Trowbridge, Wiltshire, Able Motorcycle Training very quickly established a reputation for excellent quality tuition, at a competitive price, with pupils having a lot of fun along the way. As a consequence, pupils are willing to travel great distances (even from abroad) to attend the school.
In 1999, Mark took and passed the Institute of Advanced Motorists motorcycle test. Having passed, was immediately asked to become 'Senior Observer' for the IAM, which he had to decline.
In 2004, Mark competed in the NG Road Racing Championship in the Streetstock 1000 class on a Yamaha YZF-R1. Starting from the back, and earning his way up the grid, he eventually finished 6th in the Championship. But the important part of the whole experience was the knowledge gained along the way.
November 2019 - Mark decided to sell the school to Adrian Layfield & Steve Mawby who he trained to become instructors back in 2014 and leaving him to set up their own training school ALL Ride Motorcycle Training in Radstock in June. 2017. This has now grown operating up to 7 days a week during the warmer months with 8 DSA instructors in total.
Mark Able continues to instruct Full Test DAS & A2 students for the school but selling the business allows for new investment with replacement bikes being introduced over the coming weeks from the moped to the large bikes firstly with two brand new Yamaha MT07 machines purchased from Pheonix Yamaha in Trowbridge. The instructing team remains the same with old welcoming faces to returning students and friendly faces to new trainees.
Everyone at Able Motorcycle Training look forward to seeing the new machines arrive over the coming months and to see anyone wanting to take up motorcycling.
Adrian & Steve look forward to hearing from you.
